Anyone who knows me, especially my roommates, knows more often than not my signature fall/winter OOTD consists of blue jeans and a black turtleneck. When it comes to classic staples, I’m all on board. They tend to be a bit pricier, (although these days you can find some great buys at Zara, TopShop, or the Outnet) but are definitely well-worth the investment simply given how many times they’re worn and restyled. This year my go-to basics are: this Alice & Olivia turtleneck ( I actually bought it 2 years ago and it’s still going strong!), these new Anine Bing jeans that I’ve been wearing on repeat, and these black suede Sezane booties — one of my most worn purchases all year!
To liven up these classic pieces and add an updated appeal to my everyday go-to ’s, I love turning to trends. I sort of think trends and classics are like salt and pepper. There’s definitely a time and place to be super trendy or classically chic, but mixing the two together often delivers a well-balanced combination. This winter, in particular, I’m loving the striking appeal of red winter coats.
Trends sites and big-name bloggers have been rocking red head to toe, and while an entire rouge ensemble seems a bit too much for my day-to-day life, I’m all for adding a touch of this vibrant hue to liven up my everyday basics. I scooped up this particular coat on a "final few" rack from Zara. Despite red being the top trendy color of the moment, I actually found my search for the perfect red coat quite challenging. Some were too tailored, others too boxy, some not particularly encompassing that fiery fierce hue, but after searching high and low and trying on many red coats in person, I’m linking my top list of contenders if you too are on the hunt for the perfect red winter coat.
I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again, but I was definitely skeptical about the "baker boy" hat trend, simply because it felt a bit like this years’ "trendy choker". I started seeing glimpses of it here and there back in August, then all of a sudden come December, it seemed like 1 out of every 5 girls was rocking some rendition of this hat. If you’re skeptical of shelf life, this trend may not be for you, although Karl Lagerfeld just released an updated rendition of it at Chanel’s recent Metiers d’Art Paris show in Hamburg, leading many trend predictors to think the cabbie hat/baker boy hat is about to ride a brand new wave! Like my love of red winter coats, I too am all for this second wave. Sometimes sticking with basics can feel a bit underwhelming, and I’ve found the subtle touch of a trendy baker boy hat pulls everything together!

What’s your favorite trend this season? If you’re looking for some solid basics and a few trends to throw in the mix, I’m linking my entire look + look-alike pieces below! PS. Zara is not a retailer included on rewardStyle, so if you’re looking for this exact coat, it won’t be in the images below, but I’ve linked it HERE and along with another Zara option HERE! xx Erica
