Whether you’ve been reading Poor Little It Girl for the last 9 years, 9 months, 9 days, or 9 minutes, you know that your girl here loves a bold red lip. I don’t know when my red lip love began, but there’s just something about that bold pop on an otherwise minimal face of makeup that just suits me. So today, I’m sharing with you 5 beauty tips to do the perfect red lip for the holidays. It’s easier than you think I promise!
How to Do the Perfect Red Lip for the Holidays
Sure there are a hundred more steps I’m sure professional makeup artists do to create a long last red lip. But who in real life has time for all this? These 5 beauty tips here are easy, quick and I promise my lip color lasts way longer than just applying lipstick and that’s it. You’ve gotta prep, girl! Ok, so here we go with my 5 beauty tips to master the perfect red lip for the holidays.
1. Exfoliate Your Lips
There are loads of scrubs and rubs you can use to exfoliate your lips and that’s all fine and well. But for me, I typically just do a few swipes of my toothbrush over my lips as I’m brushing my teeth in the morning. It’s a gentle, easy exfoliate and takes zero extra effort.
2. Start With A Nude Foundation
When I’m applying my makeup, I always apply foundation on my lips as well. I don’t make sure there’s like a full thick coat or anything, but as I’m swiping my foundation on I just go over my lips a bit too. It creates a smooth, even surface to apply the product to so it goes on easily. You can actually watch my full everyday makeup tutorial at the bottom of this blog post.
3. Find Your Perfect Red
I did a full blog post on my favorite red lipstick shades for fair skin that you can check out here. By far, this is one of the most popular makeup posts I’ve ever done here on Poor Little It Girl so if you haven’t checked it out, do it now. But even if you don’t have fair skin, many of these shades will work on just about any skin tone. Just find the best one for you!
4. Line Your Lips + Fill In
Using liner is a bit of a controversial topic for some reason. I don’t know why people think it’s so taboo, lip liner is amazing! It gives you more control to line your lips, prevents the lipstick from bleeding, and most importantly, keeps the lipstick on your lips a lot longer! No need to find a liner to match each shade perfectly. This is the one red liner I swear by I use for just about every red lipstick shade I wear, which is a lot!
5. Top Off With Lipstick
And the final step: the actual red lipstick! Ha! It takes a second to get here (literally, seconds) but now that your lips are prepped and lined, you can easily apply your favorite shade of lipstick on top and you’re ready to go. Feel free to blot if need be and use a cotton swab or brush dabbed in the foundation to clean up any mistakes. But really, you should be good to go this holiday season with the perfect, long-lasting, red lip!
